The Simple Life

by christina posted April 9, 2012 category christina, musings

Lately I’ve noticed that there’s been a huge upsurge in jam making, pie crusts from scratch, farmhouse style tables, DIY projects. There’s an emphasis on craftsmanship that was lost for a while in the dizzy yellow florescent of IKEA.

I think those are all good signs; signs that hopefully, maybe, we are turning from fast and furious microwave lifestyles and embracing a life that is rich in meaning and small moments. That we’re connecting over home-cooked meals seasoned with herbs from the backyard. Perhaps we are tiring from our consumerist lifestyles with the frantic chant of more, more, more, better, better, better bombarding us from every side.

Zach and I just returned from a family vacation to Bozeman, Montana and although I was sick for most of it and slept 2/3 of our vacation, I felt myself change a little.

Right before we left Montana, I turned to Zach and said, “I don’t want to forget this. I want to live more simply,  to live more Montana-ish. I want to wear cargo pants.”  Zach and I talked a lot about it on the plane ride and in the Denver airport, chowing down in the food court.

(Yes, this is a herd of buffalo approaching our car.)

We didn’t do much while in Montana. I slept a lot and coughed constantly, we played with our nieces and went to the library. One day, we ate ice cream at 10:30am, went to Yellowstone and relaxed in the Boiling River with mountains surrounding us and a blue sky overhead.

My sister-in-law made lavender lotion in her kitchen and I barely checked my email and used the Internet for approximately one hour total our whole trip. We watched one movie and spent most of our evenings talking. I never felt anxious or stressed or insecure.  It was completely freeing.

(Please, do me a favor and be amazed at the length of her eyelashes.)

My mind is still trying to wrap itself around what I experienced and what I am feeling.  All I can tell you right now is that I’m trying to change, slowly, to bring more of Montana into our Nashville lifestyle.

I’m cutting down on the blogs I read, specifically the ones that make me feel like I need to put together better outfits or have better hair or revamp my makeup bag. I’m realizing that there’s a difference between feeling inspired and feeling like a failure. I’m also spending less time on the Internet, and when I do use it, it’s purposeful, not aimless.

We’re trying to buy less and create more; I planted a small herb garden on our balcony. We are eating a lot of leftovers and trying to limit our grocery store runs, which were almost daily. I wore a dress on Easter that was not quintessentially pastel or even remotely spring-y. It was black.

But I’m trying to be content with what I have, even if it isn’t the most fashion-forward. Zach is learning to fix our 13-year-old cars himself and I’m trying not to be embarrassed when my car rattles loudly at long red stoplights. Note: the rattling is from the car’s age, not from Zach’s fix-it work.

We took our nieces out for ice cream one evening and it was so fun. It’s proof that not every kid needs Disneyland and videogames to have fun. Sometimes, they just need a backyard to run in, or chocolate ice cream before bedtime. Or an Easter basket hunt, with a chocolate bunny hidden in the bushes.

Life is full of choices, decisions on how we will live our lives and what we will fill them with. I want to fill mine with the sound of book pages turning, conversations with my husband, prayers amidst struggle, tea kettles whistling.

I want to fill mine with the smells of dirt and green grass, rosemary, chocolate cookies for an ordinary day. I want my life to be quieter, impulse buys to be stilled, necessities clearly standing out among wants.

Comparison is the thief of joy, and I want to stop comparing my life to everyone else. I want to just be. And be well. Be joyful.

Along these same lines, and for your reading pleasure, please read this. Also, this.

And, to end this post, more eyelashes.

  1. LOVE! I am so there with you.

  2. Christina,

What a great Blog and photos. We loved having that time together with all of us. The Apostle Paul said the he learned the secret of being content – Phil. 4:11&12 based on who God is and what He is doing in our lives Phil. 2:13. I wish that we would have been able to go for a run together in MT. I like the simplicity of a long run – not the hecktic pace of a sprint, but the stride after a stride, mile after mile – life is like a marathon, or half marathon – we need to take time to enjoy each step, not just the finish. My prayer is that both you and Zach will be content that God is continuing to work in you both to will and to work for His good pleasure – enjoy life together.

    Dale

PS – looking forward to running together in a few weeks.

  3. I don’t believe the part about the cargo pants.

    • With Zach as my witness, I can honestly say I said over and over “I need to wear cargo pants.”

  4. I really enjoyed this blog post. You have quite a sweet tooth, don’t you? ;) hope you’re all well in Nashville.

My favorite line was about impulse buys being stilled and necessities being clear.

    • Thanks so much, Sarah. I hope you and your sweet family (and new baby Piper) are doing living well.
